How Musical Instruments Make Sound
– Sound energy.
– In order to make sound, an object need to move back and fro.
– Back and fro motion is known as vibration.
– When something vibrates, it makes the air vibrate and that vibration moves through the air from the object to our ears.

 

– The vibrating air makes the eardrum in our ears vibrate, that is how we hear the sound.

 

– When we play music instrument, we are just making it vibrates in a special way to make musical notes.
– Different musical instruments make sound in different ways.

Different ways that musical instruments make sounds
1) Bells, Cymbals and drums

– Make sound when you hit them.
– Hitting them softly will make a soft vibration and a quiet sound.
– Hitting them hard will create a big vibration and a loud sound.

 

2) Guitars, violins and harps
– Make sound when the strings vibrates.
– The harder the musicians pluck the strings, the louder the sound.

3) Flutes, trumpets and clarinets (wind instrument)
– They are hollow tubes with air inside.

 

– You can make the air vibrate by blowing into the tubes.
– When blowing trumpet, the lips are made to vibrate when you blow, which causes the air in the trumpet to vibrate to make music.

– Flute works differently from trumpet, instead of making lips vibrate, you blow across the hole at the top and that makes the air inside vibrate.

 

Experiment
– Fill a few empty bottles with different water levels.

– Blow across the opening of the bottles to create musical notes.

– When there are more water in the bottles, there are less air space.
– A high note will be created when you blow into the bottles with less air space, as the air vibrate faster.

– When there are lesser water in the bottles, there are more air space.
– A low note will be created when you blow into bottles with more air space, as the air vibrate slower.
