3 friends divided some ice-cream sticks equally.

After all of them ate 4 ice-cream sticks each,
the total number of ice-cream sticks
remaining is equal to the ice-cream sticks
each had after division.

How many ice-cream sticks are there initially?

Answer :

There are 18 ice-cream sticks initially.

How do we get the answer 18 ?  Let’s go through this step by step.

Step 1) 3 friends divided some ice-cream sticks equally.

Hence, 3 * X ice-cream sticks initially and each got X ice-cream
sticks after division.

Step 2) all of them ate 4 ice-cream sticks each

All of them ate 4 ice-cream sticks. So, each have (X – 4) ice-cream
sticks remaining.

Step 3) the total number of ice-cream sticks remaining is equal
to the ice-cream sticks each had after division.

 

We’ll need to convert the statement to an equivalent equation,

total number of ice-cream sticks remaining = ice-cream sticks each had after division

3 * (X – 4) = X

3X – 12 = X

3X – X = 12

2X = 12

X = 6

Hence, the initial ice-cream sticks would be 3 * X = 18
